Camino Santiago de Compostela

Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of Saint James, is a pilgrimage route that traces the legendary path taken by the apostle, Saint James, to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Along the route, the scallop shell has become an emblematic symbol of the pilgrimage and is used extensively in its art and architecture. The scallop shell represents the journey to Santiago, where pilgrims would often collect them as souvenirs.

This shell has been used since the early medieval period by pilgrims as a symbol of their journey, worn as a badge on their clothing, and later incorporated into religious art and architecture. The scallop shell represents the journey of the pilgrim, with the grooves on the shell representing the various paths that lead to the same destination. And is a source of nourishment for pilgrims traveling long distances.

Domaine Le Touran is part of this rich history as the original purpose of the main house was an Inn in the late 1600s where pilgrims could stay for the night.  We are also on the UNESCO heritage site of the 900 km Route of Vezelay and will continue to welcome pilgrims from all over the world as they choose us to rest on this part of their journey and you will see the scallop symbol throughout our village of Pellegrue.
